    Stress and Insomnia

Stress can be one of the main causes of insomnia. Many people find that work, school or home problems can lead to lack of sleep or quality of sleep. Transient Insomnia (Adjustment Sleep Disorder) represents sleep disturbance temporarily related to acute stress, conflict or environmental change causing emotional agitation. The hyper-arousal that stress can cause can disrupt the balance between sleep and wakefulness. If you find yourself tossing and turning because of anxiety there things you can do help induce sleep:

  • Get in some exercise every day (but not in the evening before bed time).

  • Have a ‘winding down’ time. Playing relaxing music, reading a book, or taking a bath are all great ways to sooth nerves and get our bodies ready for sleep.

  • Do not bring stress into the bedroom. Items such as computers, TV and telephones should be removed from the bedroom. Try painting your room soothing colors like green and blue.
